Tax relief and financial benefits for UK solicitors financing LegisBox: complete guide 2026

LegisBox represents an investment in your firm's productivity, compliance and competitiveness. But the true cost of that investment is significantly reduced by several HMRC tax reliefs and financial benefits available to UK solicitors, many of which go unclaimed. This is the complete guide to what you can access.

Disclaimer: this guide provides general information on available tax reliefs and financial support. It does not constitute tax advice. You should consult your accountant or tax adviser to confirm which reliefs apply to your specific situation.

1. Business expense deduction

This is the most immediate and significant benefit. For solicitors and barristers operating as self-employed professionals or through a partnership, the LegisBox subscription is an allowable business expense under HMRC rules, may be tax-deductible against professional income, depending on your circumstances, just like any other software subscription or professional database.

For a solicitor paying income tax, the deduction reduces taxable profit, so the real cost of the subscription after tax relief is lower than the headline price. By how much depends on your tax position, your structure and the reliefs that apply to you, so we do not quote figures: your accountant can run the numbers for your firm.

No special application required: the LegisBox subscription is deducted as a business expense in exactly the same way as any legal database subscription (Westlaw, Lexis+), case management software, or professional service fee. Your accountant handles it automatically.

2. VAT recovery

If your firm is VAT-registered, the VAT element of the LegisBox subscription is, subject to conditions, reclaimable as input tax on your VAT return, provided the subscription is used for VATable business activities, which it will be in virtually all cases for a law firm.

For a VAT-registered firm, VAT is therefore a cash-flow item only; check with your accountant how this applies to your firm.

3. Annual Investment Allowance

The Annual Investment Allowance lets you deduct the full value of qualifying equipment from your profits before tax, up to £1 million per accounting period (GOV.UK). It is not available to every business structure and some purchases do not qualify; check with your accountant.

According to GOV.UK, the allowance does not apply to business cars, to items you already owned for another use, or to items you were given; it is not available to mixed partnerships (where a company is one of the partners); and where equipment is also used outside the business, the allowance is reduced proportionally for sole traders and partnerships. The period limit is adjusted if the accounting period is not 12 months, and the allowance is claimed on your tax return.

Check with your accountant: whether, and how, the allowance applies to your firm and to a particular purchase depends on your business structure and circumstances.

4. SRA continuing competence

The training provided with LegisBox, initial on-site training on installation, and any subsequent user training sessions, can support your continuing competence obligations under the SRA's framework.

The cost of that training is itself an allowable business expense.

5. Available funding and support programmes

Beyond direct tax relief, several funding and support programmes are available to UK law firms adopting AI tools.

Government

Innovate UK Smart Grants

Innovate UK runs regular grant competitions for SMEs adopting or implementing innovative technology. Law firms with 10+ staff structured as LLPs or limited companies may qualify under innovation-in-services programmes. Eligible costs, rates and conditions are set by each competition.

Finance

British Business Bank

The British Business Bank supports SME finance through several schemes. The Growth Guarantee Scheme provides government-backed loans at competitive rates for business investment, including technology adoption. Available through participating lenders including major high street banks.

Regional

Regional Growth Funds

Many Combined Authorities and Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) have digital transformation grants for SMEs in their region. These vary by location but have their own eligibility rules and funding rates.

Sector

Law Society & SRA Programmes

The Law Society publishes guidance on generative AI and on buying new technology for law firms.

6. R&D Tax Credits (for structured firms)

Law firms structured as limited companies that are actively developing or adapting AI workflows, for example, creating bespoke document analysis templates, training custom models, or integrating LegisBox into proprietary matter management systems, may be eligible for R&D Tax Credits under the HMRC SME scheme (for firms with fewer than 500 employees).

This is a more specialist route requiring advice from an R&D tax specialist, but worth exploring for larger or more technically active firms. HMRC's definition of qualifying R&D activities has been clarified to include technology integration and software adaptation work.

7. Real cost summary: Solo plan example
