Are documents uploaded to LegisBox sent to an external server?

With LegisBox Private: no. It is installed physically in your firm. Your clients' documents stay within your local network. An internet connection is only used to download updates to public law (BAILII, legislation.gov.uk, Find Case Law, ICO decisions), not to transmit private client data.

Is using ChatGPT with client documents safe for a UK solicitor?

No. Uploading confidential client files to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any cloud service risks breaching Legal Professional Privilege, UK GDPR, and the SRA Code of Conduct. The SRA issued a warning notice on the misuse of AI on 17 August 2026. Your data reaches servers outside your control, often outside the UK. LegisBox eliminates this risk: the AI is in your firm.

Does LegisBox protect Legal Professional Privilege?

Yes. LPP requires that privileged communications remain confidential. Uploading client files to any cloud AI, even one claiming UK compliance, risks waiving privilege permanently and irreversibly. What does the SRA warning notice say about AI and client confidentiality?

The SRA published a warning notice, "Misuse of AI", on 17 August 2026. It raises two concerns: inaccurate AI-generated content and risks to client confidentiality. On confidentiality, it says both paid-for and free AI tools may lack the contractual and technical safeguards needed to protect client confidentiality, and that firms should be satisfied that client data stays in a secure environment, is not accessed by unauthorised third parties, is not used to train AI models without appropriate authorisation, and is not kept longer than necessary. The notice does not prescribe particular tools or architectures: each firm remains responsible for its own choices.

Can I deduct LegisBox as a business expense?

Yes, subject to conditions. The LegisBox subscription may be an allowable business expense for solicitors and barristers. The real cost depends on your tax position and the reliefs that apply to you. The Annual Investment Allowance lets you deduct the full value of qualifying equipment from your profits before tax, up to £1 million per accounting period (GOV.UK). It is not available to every business structure and some purchases do not qualify; check with your accountant.
