Everything you want to know about LegisBox, confidentiality, installation, SRA compliance, pricing and tax relief for UK solicitors.

Confidentiality & compliance
With LegisBox Private: no. It is installed physically in your firm. Your clients' documents stay within your local network. An internet connection is only used to download updates to public law (BAILII, legislation.gov.uk, Find Case Law, ICO decisions), not to transmit private client data. If you use LegisBox Cloud, your documents are pseudonymised by LexPrivacy before any processing.
Not without care. The SRA's warning notice "Misuse of AI" (17 August 2026) says both paid-for and free AI tools may lack the safeguards needed to protect client confidentiality, and that entering confidential client information into public AI tools is likely to breach confidentiality and may permanently waive privilege. With LegisBox Private the AI runs inside your firm; LegisBox Cloud pseudonymises documents before processing. Read the full guide →
Legal professional privilege depends on confidentiality being maintained. The SRA says that entering client information into public AI tools is likely to breach confidentiality, and that privilege may then be permanently waived. LegisBox Private is designed to keep your files within your firm's network rather than with a third-party host. Whether privilege is protected also depends on how your firm uses any tool. LegisBox is designed to help with UK GDPR compliance. All data stays in your firm. No data processing agreements with cloud sub-processors required for firm documents. Full UK GDPR guide →
The SRA published a warning notice, "Misuse of AI", on 17 August 2026. It raises two concerns: inaccurate AI-generated content and risks to client confidentiality. On confidentiality, it says both paid-for and free AI tools may lack the contractual and technical safeguards needed to protect client confidentiality, and that firms should be satisfied that client data stays in a secure environment, is not accessed by unauthorised third parties, is not used to train AI models without appropriate authorisation, and is not kept longer than necessary. The notice does not prescribe particular tools or architectures: each firm remains responsible for its own choices.
LegisBox is designed to help firms keep client data within their own control, which is relevant to the confidentiality duty in paragraph 6.3 of the SRA Codes of Conduct. Compliance remains your firm's responsibility. Human review is required on every output, Lex assists, but the solicitor retains professional responsibility. SRA Warning Notice guide →
How it works
Less than one working day. Our team handles everything: hardware delivery, network installation, secure configuration, and training for your solicitors. No technical skills required from your side. You can begin using it the same day it arrives.
Yes. LegisBox is installed in your firm and works completely offline. An internet connection is only used for automatic nightly updates to public law (BAILII, legislation.gov.uk, Find Case Law, ICO decisions). Your case files and AI remain available even during a network outage, critical for court days when connectivity is unreliable.
Yes. LegisBox includes secure remote access with end-to-end encryption. You can access your case files from any device (PC, Mac, tablet, phone) via an encrypted connection, from the Royal Courts of Justice, your home, or while travelling. LegisBox is designed to help maintain LPP: your data stays within your network.
The fundamental difference is where your data is processed. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot send your clients' documents to foreign servers outside your control, risking LPP waiver and UK GDPR breaches. LegisBox processes everything locally, so your data stays within your network. LegisBox is also specialised in English and Welsh law: it knows BAILII, legislation.gov.uk, the SRA Code of Conduct, and CPR deadlines, updated every night.
Your data belongs entirely to you. In the event of a move or structural change, our team supports the hardware transfer and data migration to the new location. All your data remains under your control at every step, nothing is held in any cloud or third-party system.
Pricing & tax relief
Yes, everything is included in the monthly fee: automatic nightly updates to legislation and case law (BAILII, legislation.gov.uk, Find Case Law, ICO decisions, SRA guidance, Law Commission reports), technical support, hardware and software maintenance, and AI updates. No hidden costs, no per-query charges.
Yes, subject to conditions. The LegisBox subscription may be an allowable business expense for solicitors and barristers under HMRC rules. The real cost depends on your tax position and the reliefs that apply to you. The Annual Investment Allowance lets you deduct the full value of qualifying equipment from your profits before tax, up to £1 million per accounting period (GOV.UK). It is not available to every business structure and some purchases do not qualify; check with your accountant. Full tax guide →
It can contribute to your learning and reflection. It is for each solicitor to decide how training fits their own continuing competence record under the SRA's framework.
The standard commitment is 36 months, which corresponds to the hardware lease model. Different terms can be discussed depending on your firm's situation, contact us to discuss this during the demo. There are no penalties for upgrading your plan during the term.
Features
Yes. LegisBox supports 26 languages, including Arabic, Mandarin, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Polish and more. For each foreign-language document, Lex generates a translation and a legal relevance summary indicating the nature of the document and its importance to the matter, critical for international commercial work and immigration files.
Yes. LegisBox includes automatic text recognition that converts scanned documents and images into indexed, searchable text. Recognition quality is high, including on lower-resolution scans, useful for handwritten notes, old deeds, and legacy paper files.
The number of simultaneous users depends on the plan chosen: up to 4 solicitors on Solo, up to 10 on Professional, 10 or more on Chambers. Simultaneous access is managed automatically by the box, no configuration required. All users share the same on-premises hardware, meaning your data stays within the firm regardless of how many fee earners are logged in.
Yes. Lex is trained on the Civil Procedure Rules, the Limitation Act 1980, and the full body of procedural law for England and Wales. It can calculate deadline dates, flag forthcoming time limits from case documents, and alert your team through the smart diary system. SRA compliance, the duty to act in clients' best interests and avoid negligence, is built into the deadline-tracking design.
Company Intelligence & Intellectual Property
Yes. Company Intelligence covers the United Kingdom (Companies House), France (API Recherche Entreprises) and Italy (VIES EU) natively, without any third-party tool. See the Company Intelligence page for details.
LegisBox cross-checks directors, beneficial owners and company identities across all active matters. If the same person appears in two opposing matters, for example a director of Harrington & Partners Ltd also linked to Blackstone Trading Ltd, an immediate “Conflict detected” alert is raised. This supports your SRA Code of Conduct Chapter 6 conflict check obligations.
Yes. Winding up, director changes, mortgage charges and confirmation statements trigger real-time notifications inside the matter. Companies House processes over 10 million filings per year, LegisBox surfaces the ones that matter to your open files.
Yes. The Intellectual Property module monitors EPO patents and EUIPO and IPO UK trade marks, with automatic opposition alerts and confidential Word export, post-Brexit multi-jurisdiction included.
Company Intelligence is integrated into Solo, Professional and Chambers. See Pricing or contact us for plan details. All prices are in £.
Since Brexit, EUIPO and IPO UK are separate registers. LegisBox watches both simultaneously and pushes opposition or expiry alerts into the relevant matter. Most firms only watch one register, LegisBox watches both.
Yes. Company and IP enrichment uses official public registers. Processing follows UK GDPR / DPA 2018. Word exports include a CONFIDENTIAL watermark and GDPR compliance footer.
Yes, within existing duties. The SRA's warning notice "Misuse of AI" (17 August 2026) says it takes an outcomes-focused approach: firms are free to use AI tools and adopt new ways of working, provided they meet SRA standards. Solicitors remain accountable for their work and outputs whatever tools they use, and must supervise effectively. Read the SRA warning notice →
According to the SRA's warning notice, entering confidential client information into public AI tools is likely to breach confidentiality, and privilege may then be permanently waived. Depending on the provider's terms, settings and technical architecture, information entered into any AI system may be stored, retained or used to improve the tool. Firms should enter client information into AI systems where appropriate contractual, technical and organisational safeguards are in place. Pseudonymising documents before sending them reduces what leaves your computer: LexPrivacy is a free Windows and Mac program that does this locally. It does not remove your duty to check the service's terms.
Pseudonymisation replaces identifying details with codes; a separate key allows them to be restored, and the data remains personal data under UK GDPR. Anonymisation requires that individuals can no longer be identified, a demanding standard for legal documents. LexPrivacy pseudonymises.
In R (Ayinde) v Haringey LBC [2025] EWHC 1383 (Admin), false AI-generated citations were put before the court; the solicitor and barrister involved faced a wasted costs application and were referred to their regulators. The SRA's warning notice says reliance on AI output would not be a suitable defence in this scenario and that lawyers must verify all content in legal submissions. LegisBox answers cite their sources, but verification remains your responsibility.
LegisBox Private runs the AI model inside your practice, on dedicated hardware, so your files are not sent to a third-party host. An internet connection is used to download updates to public law. The SRA's notice acknowledges that many firms are exploring in-house AI systems and says client confidentiality must be maintained in any AI or wider technology used. Discover LegisBox Private →
